| Title on Object | Urban Renewal spectators |
| Title | Donut machine spectators, Pope's 1974 |
| Notes | Black and white image of two boys and a woman standing outside of Pope's Ice Cream and Donut Shop watching the doughnut machine. |
| Artist Statement | The distant view beyond the window and spectators shows demolition of downtown buildings during the Urban Renewal era that spanned 169-1974. To the left is the Johnston furniture store, among a number of such downtown competing businesses whose owners blamed their failure on the competition of the recently built Valley River Center. Some of the proponents of Urban Renewal included downtown furniture and jewelry store owners who thought Urban Renewal would revitalize their businesses. Directly across the street is an empty lot that had been the site of the Odysey Coffee House, a popular late 1960s and early 1970s coffee house. Prior to the coffee house the building housed Caroll's Drug store, a business in Eugene since the late 1920s. |
