| Notes | Black and white image of the Brass Rail building being demolished. A crane sits in the alley between the Smeed Hotel building and the Brass Rail building. The Brass Rail building housed the Brass Rail tavern, Loren's Barber Shop and Pope's Ice Cream and Donut Shop. |
| Artist Statement | A Eugene Renewal Agency wrecking ball demolishes the historic Loren's Barbershop and Brass Rail Tavern building at 7th Avenue and Willamette street in Eugene, Oregon. The building was constructed in the 1870s and housed a brothel upstairs and a bar that was the oldest continuing bar in Oregon until it was demolished in 1972. The brick building at the right is the Smeed Hotel, which was restored to house office and retail businesses. This photograph faces east, looking down the alley that separated the Brass Rail Tavern building and the Smeed Hotel. While the Brass Rail and other historic buildings were being demolished to create a new downtown, the Smeed Hotel owners were able to restore their building for offices and stores. The Coffee Bean, one of the more popular businesse in Eugene, was a coffee house opened in 1973 on the second floor of the Smeed Hotel. Because of financial problems, The Bean was closed in 1976. At the time it was the only upscale coffee house in Eugene. |
