| Descriptive Title | Two Children Looking South from Skinner Butte, Eugene, Oregon; |
| Notes | A black and white photograph. Two children stand next to a boy's bicycle on a footpath in a sloping meadow on Skinner Butte in Eugene, Oregon. The view is to the south, down the hill and along Willamette Street towards Spencer Butte the distance. Two men dressed in suits and hats walk up the hill along the path towards the children. There is a wooden fence partway down the hill, and a man in a suit and a woman with a long dress and broad-brimmed hat are just behind it along the path, approaching a gap. Beyond them are railroad tracks. A railroad car can be seen on the tracks; the roof and chimney of the station are visible behind it. The children have their backs to the camera. The girl standing on the right is dressed in a dark sweater and dark stockings and shoes. Her dress or skirt is knee-length and light-colored, with stripes. Her blonde hair is cut straight across just above her shoulders. On her left the other child, who appears to be a boy, supports the bicycle by holding its handlebars. He wears a dark hat, light-colored long-sleeved shirt, dark shorts, and dark stockings. Nearby on the butte to the right of the men is a large wooden barn or shed with advertisements painted on its side, including what looks like "Portland" and the words "Placer County". Beyond the shed the top story, roof, and two-story porch of what is now the Palace Hotel can be seen. Willamette Street is lined with buildings, sidewalks, trees, pedestrians, and utility poles and wires. Two sets of tracks for streetcars appear to run down the middle of the street. A fountain or memorial is in the middle of the street where it ends at the foot of the butte. |
