Alvord Desert, Steens Mountain, Eastern Oregon
TitleAlvord Desert, Steens Mountain, Eastern Oregon
Artwork DescriptionA black-and-white landscape photograph that depicts an arid environment under a tempestuous sky.
Description on ObjectEdward Vliek; Alvord Desert and Steens Mountain- Eastern Oregon
Artist StatementRising a vertical mile above the alkali flats and hot springs of the Alvord Desert, the 50-mile-long Steens Mountain is a landmark for all of southeastern Oregon. Once populated by the seminomadic Northern Paiute Indians, this area is now sparsely populated by cattle ranchers and people who love the desert. This seemingly desolate area is a favorite area of mine to photograph. It offers broad vistas and very few people. You can find areas to hike where you might not see anyone for days, solitude is a norm for this region of Oregon, a welcome change from working and living in the Willamete Valley. Unfortunately, this area is also starting to attract gold miners. An open pit, heap leach mine is scheduled to start up on Grassy Butte approximately 30 miles east of the Alvord/Steens area. This is such a fragile area that any type of mining could cause irreversible damage to this unique corner of Oregon (Vliek, 1991).
