Artist StatementThis photography was made in the spring of 1985 in Seattle, Washington, using a 5 x 7 inch view camera. It is selected from the portfolio; ""Photographs from a Common Passage."" The print displayed here was made in May of 1992. It is matched to the color and density of the original contact print I made in my darkroom seven years ago. A city is identified not only by its skyline, but also by its neighborhoods, the backyards where a significant amount of city living takes place. These areas, often enclosed by a fence, hedge, or stand of trees, mark a place that is unique. They are quiet places; some, well-tended corners of solitude, others, fascinating for their diversity of color, content, and mood. All offer a view into the secret places that we fashion around ourselves. The scenes I've found offer another view of what brings and keeps one within a city setting. I have been photographing neighborhood landscapes since 1980. I am continuing this work in Seattle, Washington. Other portfolios include; ""Local Color"" Rochester, New York; ""New Work: Photographs of Maine""; ""The Vancouver Portfolio"" Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; ""Photographs from a Common Passage"" Seattle, Washington; and ""Peripheral Visions, Color Photographs from Nevada"" (Sutto, 1991).
