Art and Architecture Images (AAI) is a growing collection of images suitable for use in classroom instruction, study and research. It consists of images of cultural objects that range from prehistoric to the contemporary era and includes architecture, works of art and documentary images from western and non-western sources. AAI is limited to the UO campus network. Users must be on campus or using the UO wireless network, or be connected to UO via a VPN connection.

Images in the AAI collection are produced in-house by the Visual Resources Collection staff and through purchase from digital image vendors at the request of University of Oregon faculty and students. Collection development decisions are based on size and quality of the source image and its suitability for general use by the UO community. Image sources include books from the UO Library collection, analog slides and mounted photographs from the Visual Resources Collection, or other UO departmental resources. The VRC currently holds over 350,000 35mm slide images and over 6,000 mounted photographs. It is the policy of the VRC not to produce digital images that are already available through the two image subscription databases provided by the UO Libraries: ARTstor is a digital library of over one million images.  CAMIO is an online collection of 100,000 images from art museums.

Images may be requested for inclusion in AAI by UO faculty and graduate students for classroom use or research purposes. The VRC will work with departments to develop subject resources as time and staffing allow and assist departments interested in pursuing large-scale digitization projects in finding Graduate Research Fellows, interns and volunteer positions to support these projects. Students seeking experience in digital project workflow and image editing are strongly encouraged to inquire about these and workstudy opportunities in the VRC.

Requesting Images

The Visual Resources Collection creates digital materials only for inclusion in the AAI database. Images may be requested for inclusion in AAI by UO faculty and graduate students for classroom use or research purposes. Collection development decisions are based on size and quality of the source image and its suitability for general use by the UO community. Image sources include books from the UO Library collection, analog slides and mounted photographs from the Visual Resources Collection, or other UO departmental resources. Personal collections, unless formally donated to the VRC, are not candidates for digitization by VRC staff. Materials must be submitted in person or by online request to the VRC for digitization two weeks prior to the date needed. Source material must be available for the full two weeks. Images in the AAI collection are approximately 1024x768 pixels. Images are scanned at 400ppi for printed or photographic material, 2400ppi for 35mm slides from copystand and 4000ppi for original 35mm slides, producing large, archival-quality tiff files. Images with larger that standard dimensions, in alternate formats or details of works already in the AAI database can be produced on request, with reference to the Identifier field. For more information, please contact Julia Simic, Visual Resources Librarian. It is the policy of the VRC not to produce digital images that are already available through the two image subscription databases provided by the UO Libraries: Artstor and CAMIO.

A public workstation equipped with a flatbed/transparency scanner is available in the VRC on a first-come, first-served basis during regular hours of operation. The Architecture and Allied Arts Library also has public workstations connected to scanners with flatbed and slide scanning capability. Instruction for equipment use, digitization techniques, and other image resources and collection maintenance is available on request.
