The Electric Studio/O.G. Allen collection, ca. 1911-1913.

Orla G. Allen (dates unknown), commonly known as O.G. Allen, was a professional photographer operating in Pendleton, Oregon, circa 1910-1920. "Electric Studio" is a franchise name that appeared in locations throughout the West. The collection documents rodeo people and activities, and a Pendleton event.

The Clarence L. Andrews collection, 1805-1948

Clarence L. Andrews (1862-1948) documented and collected documentation on native life, natural resources, and exploration of Alaska and the Yukon. The collection (1805-1948) consists of approximately 1600 prints and 75 negatives by more than 60 photographers, dealing almost exclusively with Alaska and the Yukon. Main subjects include the towns of Sitka, Skagway, Eagle, and Valdez; modes of transportation, from reindeer and dogs to railroads, ships,and kayaks; Native Americans; totems; wildlife and natural resources.

The Roy C. Andrews collection, 1902-1955

Roy C. Andrews was a school teacher and administrator in Michigan, Texas, Arkansas, Washington and Oregon. He was a chemistry instructor at the University of Oregon from 1935 until his retirement in 1950. Andrews is noted for his photographs of one-room schoolhouses in southern Lane County, 1911-1913.

The collection was donated by Andrews' sisters, Martha Belknap and Dorothy Brown, in March 1955.

The Angelus Studio photograph collection, 1880s-1940s

The Angelus Studio Photographic Collection is comprised of: glass plate, nitrate, and safety negatives; original and reprinted photographs, and logbooks from the photographic studios of George M. Weister (1862-1922), Arthur M. Prentiss (unknown) and the Angelus Commercial Photo Company of Portland, Oregon.

The collection was donated to the University by Furlong in 1965.

The Walter S. Bowman collection, 1890-1925.

Walter S. Bowman (1865-1938) was a professional photographer who worked in Pendleton, Oregon, from the late 1880s to the mid 1930s. Bowman's photographs document daily life in Eastern Oregon, including special events such as the Pendleton Roundup.

The Bowman collection was donated to the Library over a period of years spanning 1947-1953. The collection was donated through the efforts of Judge James H. Sturgis and Lee D. Drake of Pendleton, a newspaperman, county clerk, and collector of historic materials.

The Lee D. Drake collection, ca. 1910-1957.

Lee D. Drake (1882-1957) was a newspaper owner and civic booster in Pendleton and Astoria, Oregon. The collection includes Drake's amateur work and that of professional photographers from the Pendleton region, capturing images of the Pendleton Round-up, tribal peoples of the region, and Drake friends and family.

Donated by James Robert Drake, son of the collector, in 1958.

The Charles W. Furlong collection, 1895-1965.

Charles Wellington Furlong (1874-1967) was an explorer, writer and scientist who documented his adventures in publications and notebooks and well as in photographs. The Furlong photographs include copies of his artwork, ethnographical evidence, historical events and personalities, and remote corners of the world.

The collection was donated to the University by Furlong in 1965.

The Gertrude Bass Warner Collection, 1903-1929

Gertrude Bass Warner (1863-1951) was an inveterate traveler and collector in Asia. The art collection that she and her husband assembled served as the foundation for the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. The UO Libraries house her art library, personal papers, ephemera, and lantern slides. Mrs. Warner became a self-taught but respected curator of Asian art, and an outspoken proponent of appreciation for Asian culture and multi-culturalism. As she traveled in the years 1904 to 1929, prior to and during military conflict in China, Japan, Korea, and Cambodia, she was able to collect images of places and traditions that have now vanished. The Warner lantern slide collection consists of 5,500 images, many hand-colored, dating from 1910 to 1929. In addition to images taken by Mrs. Warner, the collection includes slides purchased on her travels. The images depict art objects, crafts, structures, religious and traditional ceremonies, landscapes, and people.

The Album Collection

The Album collection contains approximately 40 albums from many separate donations. The albums themselves were created by individuals during the different time periods of each album. Highlights of this collection include albums of early Sutherlin, Oregon; construction of the Westover Terrace in Portland, Oregon; construction of the Bonneville dam on the Columbia River; and views of early (late 1800's) London and Peking.

The James Cloutier Collection

James Cloutier is a native Oregonian artist and photographer who began his study of art at the University of Oregon in 1958 and went on to earn an MFA. His drawings and photographs document the history of culture in Oregon, often with humourous twists, such as can be found in his illustrated map of Eugene, Oregon incorporating more than 300 local businesses with cartoon imagery. The images in the University of Oregon Library's collection feature the people of the small town of Alpine, Oregon from his 1977 book.

The Randall V. Mills Photograph Collection

Randall Vause Mills joined the University of Oregon English faculty in 1938. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mills wrote two books and numerous articles on transportation in the Pacific Northwest. He also wrote articles on bridge construction and location. In addition, Mills was interested in folklore, and was the founder and first president of the Oregon Folklore Society. The collection features photographs pertaining to transportation in the Pacific Northwest and folklore.

The Major Lee Moorhouse Photograph Collection

Major Lee Moorhouse of Pendleton, Oregon was an Indian Agent for the Umatilla Indian Reservation and a photographer. From 1888 to 1916 he produced over 9,000 images which document urban, rural, and Native American life in the Columbia Basin, and particularly Umatilla County, Oregon. So extensive and revealing are Moorhouse's images that his collection is one of the preeminent social history collections for Oregon. Special Collections & University Archives of the University of Oregon Libraries has a collection of 7000 images by Major Moorhouse.

The Dan Powell Photograph Collection

Dan Powell is an Associate Professor and Head of the Photography Program in the Department of Art at the University of Oregon, and has shown his work extensively both on the national and international level. As an artist, his work includes constructed imagery done in the studio as well as social landscape and physical landscape imagery ranging from such diverse areas as Eastern Oregon and the Western United States to New York City and various European Countries. Typically, his work is interpretive and expressive in nature.
