Public art is a mirror that reflects the environment, cultural values, and artistic vitality of the community in which it exists.
Public art is distinctive from art featured in a gallery or museum. In those controlled settings, the community is encouraged to view works of art deemed significant by others. With public art, a community is empowered with the opportunity to select art that reflects its heritage and shared values—art that best represents its people.
OREGON PUBLIC ART embodies the diversity of Oregon.

Passed in 1975, Oregon's Percent for Art legislation mandates that 1% of the direct construction funds of new or remodeled state buildings with construction budgets of $100,000 or more be set aside for the acquisition of art work. The Oregon Arts Commission oversees the Program and maintains archives of slides, photographs and related documentation for the works of art selected. The University of Oregon Libraries and the Commission received an LSTA grant to create a digital collection of the program's archives.
The Percent for Art Statewide Digital Collection and Database is a work in progress. Encompassing over a 30-year period, the database offers access to over 5200 items. Over 647 individual artists are represented, encompassing 184 individual building projects. The collection offers glimpses of 1545 unique artwork creations, visual narratives of the creative process, and documentation that speaks to the inspiration and beliefs that empower each creation. We will continue to add new images and enrich the descriptive content throughout 2008.
Browse & Search features are available at the top left of this page and throughout the collection. Browsing is available in selected categories.
Advanced Search allows the viewer to conduct their own personalized search by limiting and/or combining a number of resources.
The project is managed jointly by the Oregon Arts Commission and the University of Oregon Libraries. The Principal Investigator on the grant is Mary Grenci, Interim Head of Metadata Services and Digital Projects. The Percent for Art Digital Project Librarian is Jaye Barlous.
